Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment MICE
نویسنده
چکیده
The Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment (MICE) is currently under construction at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. MICE will prove the technology necessary for muon ionisation cooling. In ionisation cooling, particle beam emittance is reduced by passage through an energy absorbing medium and RF cavities. In its final configuration, MICE will consist of a 5.5 metre cell of an ionisation cooling channel, containing two 4-cavity linacs and 8 coils producing an overlapping solenoid field in an SFoFo arrangement. Detector systems at each end of the cooling channel will measure the 6-dimensional phase space vector of individual muons enabling the reconstruction of the full 6D beam distribution. A schematic of the cooling channel in its final configuration is shown in Figure 1.

Characterisation of the muon beams for the Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment
A novel single-particle technique to measure emittance has been developed and used to characterise seventeen different muon beams for the Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment (MICE). The muon beams, whose mean momenta vary from 171 to 281 MeV/c, have emittances of approximately 1.2–2.3 π mm-rad horizontally and 0.6– 1.0 π mm-rad vertically, a horizontal dispersion of 90– 190 mm and momentum sprea...

A neutrino factory based on a muon storage ring is the ultimate tool for studies of neutrino oscillations, including possibly leptonic CP violation. It is also the first step towards μμ colliders. The performance of this new and promising line of accelerators relies heavily on the concept of ionisation cooling of minimum ionising muons, for which much R&D is required. The concept of a muon ioni...

The Neutrino Factory has been proposed as a facility to provide an intense source of neutrinos suitable for the measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters and a possible CP violating phase to unprecedented precision. In the Neutrino Factory, neutrinos are produced by the decay of a muon beam with 20-50 GeV per muon. Initially, the muon beam occupies a large volume in phase space, which must...
متن کاملThe MICE luminosity monitor
The MICE experiment will provide the first measurement of ionisation cooling, a technique suitable for reducing the transverse emittance of a tertiary muon beam in a future neutrino factory accelerator facility. MICE is presently in the final stages of commissioning its beam line. The MICE luminosity monitor has proved an invaluable tool throughout this process, providing independent measuremen...
متن کاملMICE: The International Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment∗
Muon storage rings have been proposed for use as a source of high-energy neutrino beams (the Neutrino Factory) and as the basis for a high-energy lepton-antilepton collider (the Muon Collider). The Neutrino Factory is widely believed to be the machine of choice for the search for leptonic CP violation while the Muon Collider may prove to be the most practical route to multi-TeV lepton-antilepto...
